Reinhold Messner, widely acclaimed as the greatest mountain climber in the world, arrived in Bulgaria on Wednesday on the eve of the season opening in ski resort Bansko.
Messner will be a VIP guest to the International Mountain Film Festival that starts Thursday in the resort. The mountaneer is also to promote his new book "My Life on the Edge" to Bulgarian readers.
After he landed at Sofia airport, Messner took a ride to the Rila monastery, which is in the heart of the highest mountain on the Balkans and bears its name.
Reinhold Messner is a legend in mountain climbing - the first to scale Everest without bottled oxygen, the first to do it solo, and the first to conquer all 14 of the world's peaks over 8,000 meters.
Messner is the first to climb the forbidding southern face of Nanga Parbat (8125 m) but also the first to "traverse" the mountain - to go up one side and down another.
Simply said, Messner, who is 63 years old, have pushed the boundaries of human abilities. He has published dozens of books and appears regularly on television.
Bulgaria's biggest winter resort Bansko officially opens the new ski season on December 1 and reports snow cover is enough and the main runs are prepared.
